#MLM = My Life Monday — Things are pretty simple today

Image

I decided to do a different kind of post every day on this WordPress blog… Follower Appreciation Friday, Throwback Thursday, Write Bloody Wednesday… So… to do something for Mondays and Tuesdays… It’s Monday so to keep with the catchy tag for the posts I decided on “My Life Monday” which will basically be a weekly post about random stuff going on or that I am thinking about at the time.  My life is pretty simple so don’t expect a lot of super in depth stuff here! :-P

That’s all that I am thinking about at the moment this week… maybe next week will be a bit more interesting, eh?  ;-)

The bf and me this past spring 2013… this is my life: sunny days in Phoenix, AZ and smiles with my love. :-)

#FAF = Follower Appreciation Friday — Thank you doctorbipolar! ^_^

Well hello there! :-)

As you may know if you’ve been following this blog for a bit, I like to appreciate those who take the time to add me to their blog subscriptions. For this reason “Follower Appreciation Friday” was born. I want you all to know how much I truly do appreciate your support!

I was posting images of a list of who is following me but I decided to go back to what I used to do on tumblr. I have an ongoing project where I am writing a poem for each of my followers. Each poem is an acrostic of their screen name and if possible the poem includes aspects of whatever their blog is about.

This week I am starting on my WordPress peeps since they are currently the smallest group. Then I will move to twitter, back to tumblr, and then to the big list on facebook. If I get any new followers during the week, I will acknowledge them and then do the next poem on the list (on WordPress it appears to be in alpha order)

This week the lucky winner as it were is doctorbipolar! Click the name to see the blog and Doc, I hope you enjoy your poem! :-)

From chapbook to perfect bound (part 2)

I’ve been posting on my tumblr about my experience with CreateSpace.com to self-publish my chapbook into a perfect bound book and I also submitted my audio to have my CD available to sell online as print on demand. Going to pick up where I left off in the last post.

09/14/2013
So now I am waiting to see if my uploads pass the final review. I am guessing this is the part where an actual human being looks at the files. Super cool that it will all be put over to Kindle Direct Publishing for me!  CreateSpace has been pretty awesome so far. If only getting a book published traditionally were this easy! :-P

09/15/2013
Still working on this book…
The review came back that the cover needed some changes. I changed the cover and resubmitted. Hopefully I will hear back that all is well and I can move on to the Kindle step.
While I’m waiting I started a CD project so that I can do on-demand CDs too. I’ll let you know how that turns out. :-)

09/16/2013
Review of my book upload is complete! :-D
Got the email that my book passed review and now I need to check the proof. They offer a free PDF that I can download and print but I decided to go with ordering a physical copy of the book to proof it. It will get here in about a week (I could’ve paid for expedited shipping but I chose not to).   I’M SO EXCITED!!!! ^_^

09/17/2013
I mentioned that I started a CD project on CreateSpace…
I don’t have AIFF files so I am using my mp3s. I was thinking I could download my  CD in AIFF format since I have free codes to use on bandcamp. But… no AIFF option on bandcamp (four or five OTHER options, just no AIFF). So… I downloaded a higher quality mp3 format to maximize my upload to CreatSpace.   in the meantime, I kind of got hung up on the cover part of the CD set up… it is a bit more complicated than the book cover since there is the booklet AND the jewel case insert (the images behind plastic in clear cases) AND the image on the CD itself. My files are just for a simple insert card so I have a lot of changes to make.

09/18/2013
FINALLY finished the CD project upload…
Files are reviewed within 10 business days. I’m a little concerned because there was no clear place for the side text so it may come out with none and that may not be approved.
Once I get the notification that my CD is good to go, I will post a link. :-)

09/19/2013
I GOT THE PROOF COPY OF MY BOOK!

It was well worth the $6 (which includes shipping) to get it and have a production quality book in my hands. Sadly, it seems like every other page has an error that SOMEHOW was missed in the numerous times I went over the text and cover. There were a lot of things that I could have swore I already corrected before uploading. This delays my Kindle release until I get it all squared away. :-/

So… I have to be sure that ALL the corrections I made/am making are actually SAVED in the file that I upload for the corrections. I’ve already corrected the front cover image since what is wrong with that is not visible in the online preview that I looked at when I was setting it up. Now to fix all the little interior typos and be sure the saved item is 100% correct. I’m thinking I should print out the Word doc this time, but since I don’t have a printer it may actually be cheaper to have the proof sent (just not as quick).

Back to work for me while I wait for the CD to be reviewed and see if that comes out the way I want. I’ll keep you posted! :-)

09/20/2013
CreateSpace stuffs…

So yesterday I finished up the corrections on the book and resubmitted the files for the interior and cover… Today I got the message that the proof was ready for the book and for the CD as well. So I ordered the proof for the CD (no online proof option was available for the CD). I decided to order the proof of the book as well. Turns out that was a mistake because I realized I didn’t double check the online proof first and OF COURSE when I looked at it there was a blank page missing in the front that messed up the arrangement of my pages. OH WELL. I’ll wait for the new proof book to just have for me and then I will submit the RE-edit with the blank page added and THAT will be what gets printed.

I decided to just submit to Kindle as is.  Thankfully CreateSpace allows for the Kindle file transfer without the print proof being approved by me so I am able to review what the Kindle version will look like… I don’t  like how the margin formatting looks on the online preview of the Kindle version… I was hoping it was set up to auto size to fit to the screen. More work to do I guess. I’ll keep you posted! :-)

09/22/2013
STILL working on the CreateSpace and Kindle stuffs…

I still had one minor error in formatting on the print version and trying to get the ebook to look right is not going well since the formatting is dependent on the device used and the size of font the reader decides to use. So… for the kindle I just changed where the page breaks are and for the print book I added the blank page so the flow of the book would be correct. I’m not going to order another print since it was my own fault for not checking the online print first. Or maybe I will order another print just to have it. We’ll see after the file review is complete.

On the sales end… I went ahead and paid the extra $25 to have my book in more markets event though I have no idea if it will really do any good. I chose the 70% royalty on the ebook on Amazon.com to hopefully maximize my earnings there. We’ll see how that works for me in the short and long run. Stay tuned!

09/25/2013
I got my hard copy proof of the second edit…

I am STILL finding things in it that I could have SWORE were already corrected and saved on the file I uploaded. Still worth saving the $350 to do all this myself and not have someone else do all this checking and rechecking.

In the meantime, the Kindle is up and running and is the only thing that comes up if you search Niccolea. Only $3.99 for the ebook. :-)

Got my proof copies of my poetry book and CD!

I HAVE MY PROOFS! ^_^

#TBT = Throwback Thursday! — Original Woman

Image

I decided I would start to post my old poems once a week so that you can see where my head used to be… these will be cross posted from my livejournal.com in chronological order from when I first started that blog back in 2004… I’m almost scared to see how some of my old poetry stands the test of time… Feedback is welcomed and appreciated!

So… let’s get this series started!

.

ORIGINAL WOMAN
(Original post date/time: 2004-01-31 08:23:00)

She was found on mama continent
Eve heaven sent
Mother of Man she represent
And yet [the] Pale [ones] still not repentant

Of falter fate gave her progeny
Twisted devil prone to misogyny
Caving mother’s daughter sisters into dark odyssey
Moving Mama Original Woman’s brood on the sea

Archaeologist dug deep in Africa soil
Looking for proof of man toil
Arian pride thoroughly foil
Placing Black firmly at base of foundation of double helix coil

And she lives this original lady
In the faces of sister girl and her baby
Broad nose dark skin like brown and shady
Definitely child of Mother Eve, not maybe

Kinky curly locks and tresses
Regardless of current modes of dresses
Living as original woman child in modern stresses
Waiting for day White of crimes confesses

She be
Found even in part European me
Americanized posterity
Clinging to colorless former master identity

But still ever present in bloodline
Even when so thin fine
Descendants still carry gene sign
Of perfect original design

Marked forever by Eve omen
Perfect and beautiful Original Woman

#WBW = Write Bloody Wednesday — #3: Taylor Mali is a swell guy…

Image

And so continues my weekly Write Bloody obsession… This time around it’s Taylor Mali.

From the Write Bloody website:

Taylor Mali

Mali is the author of two books of poetry, The Last Time As We Are (Write Bloody Books 2009) and What Learning Leaves (Hanover 2002), and four CDs of spoken word. He received a New York Foundation for the Arts Grant in 2001 to develop Teacher! Teacher! a one-man show about poetry, teaching, and math which won the jury prize for best solo performance at the 2001 Comedy Arts Festival. Mali was formerly president of Poetry Slam, Inc.

So… Taylor Mali…
My first experience with him was when he appeared on Def Poetry Jam and I just loved his true to life monologue style of spoken word poetry. His great enunciation and inflection. His exaggerated mannerisms. Etc, etc. Taylor Mali has always been kind of an iconic symbol of slam poetry for me just as much if not more than Marc Smith himself.

Now for those who know him personally and have competed against him in slams, from what I have heard from a few my title of this entry would be the opposite of what they would say… but then again, I have never had to compete against him or deal with him in the role of slam master or PSI president.

My experience? It’s kind of convoluted but here goes… I was giving poet Ed Mabrey a ride from Phoenix, AZ to his feature in Tucson, AZ and along the way he gets a random phone call from a friend telling him he was in town and would try to catch Ed’s feature if what he was doing ended soon enough. The friend? You guessed it: Taylor Mali.

So Taylor shows up to the event and no one expected or asked him to perform (not like the little venue could afford his fee last minute ya know?) but… he was moved to share after watching a round of the slam. WAY TO GO TUCSON! Yeah, that’s my hometown. Uh-huh!

Honestly, I was WAY more fan gurl excited to meet Taylor Mali then when I met Saul Williams a year prior. So I was super excited when I got to be in the picture with him and my friend Aaron (an amazing poet in his own right). So… one random show up and a short conversation and a photograph later and TAYLOR MALI IS A SWELL GUY!

aaron - taylor mali and me

Me and my friend Aaron with Taylor Mali back in 2009 at the Ocotillo Poetry Slam in Tucson, AZ. Ed Mabrey was the feature and Taylor Mali showed up to support him and even performed even though he had originally said he wouldn’t. (!)

#WBW = Write Bloody Wednesday — #2: Everyone loves Buddy…

Image

Another installment in my new weekly series “Write Bloody Wednesday” to highlight the awesome poets whose work I absolutely LOVE. I think the only poet that I appreciate as much as Derrick C Brown has to be this guy: Buddy Wakefield.

From the Write Bloody website:

Buddy Wakefield

Wakefield is the two-time Individual World Poetry Slam Champion featured on NPR, the BBC, HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, and most recently signed to Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records.

So lets go back to that first night I saw Derrick C Brown… That same night another poet I had never heard of hit the stage: Buddy Wakefield. And again… I was BLOWN TOTALLY AWAY. For real. Seriously. There is no way to describe experiencing this man live in a great venue like Paper Heart. watching the video above does NOT even come close. Not at all. And yes, I bought another CD that night.

And if you read my last post, then you know the magic wasn’t over yet. Not by a long shot. I road tripped to Flagstaff, AZ the following night for a Saul Williams show and I got to see this miracle on stage again. It was a nearly magical performance that I wish had some youtube to go along with it to save it for posterity. Oh well… at least I got a picture with him that night!

4/20/2007 at the Orpheum in Flagtaff, AZ with Buddy Wakefield after the Saul Williams show

SIDE NOTE… Remember how I said Derrick Brown made me cry? Well, at that same time I was also listening to Buddy’s CD. Derrick’s CD relaxed me but Buddy’s CD had the opposite effect. When I was suffering in my heart break and I was tired of crying, I popped in Buddy’s CD and was healed of my affliction. Don’t ever forget: POETRY SAVES LIVES!

Picture with Buddy at his show in 2011

Still tweaking my blog sharing and stuff…

Looks like it does NOT share if I do the “Quick Post” option. Duly noted.

Also… I need to turn off my tumblr  and Facebook share connections to my poetry twitter since it goes there in triplicate from WP, FB, and tumblr. OOPS.

To Ad or Not to Ad

I like my WordPress better than my Blogger but my Blogger has Google AdSense that I can get paid for… and even my Weebly site connects to my AdSense but I need to make it pretty like my WordPress and it’s not as easy… if Weebly’s blog function allowed for scheduling a queue and sharing across the networks then it would be nearly perfect… so…

Back to WordPress… My other blogs I can monetize without an upgrade, but I have to APPLY to see IF my WordPress can be monetized and only if I pay for the blog to be mapped and/or hosted as a domain. I would have to make $26/yr just to break even and if WordAds work like AdSense,  I don’t have enough traffic yet for that expense to pan out… We’ll see what I end up doing… I’ll keep you posted!

From chapbook to perfect bound…

I’ve been posting over in my tumblr about how I am converting my chapbook into a 6×9 perfect bound paper back, but I haven’t said a thing about it over here in WordPress! So… going to copy and past the tumbr entries here…

Working on my first official manuscript…

I have printed many chapbooks since 2008. Some at home, some through a local print shop. Now I am upgrading to self-publishing a perfect bound book! I figure once I get this first selfie done, then I will move on to the next step and send my work to REAL publishers with, you know, standards.

Once the book is ready to print, I will post where you can order it! ^_^

Using CreateSpace for my first perfect bound printing…

So far I really like how easy it is! For some reason my version of Word does not seem to allow me to convert to PDF. Luckily, CreatSpace accpets word docs and converts to PDF for me! :-D Then the site has this super cool interactive graphic book where I can turn the pages and look at a very realistic example of what my book will be.

I don’t even remember who suggested CreateSpace to me, but whoever it was – THANK YOU!!!  ^_^

I really like CreateSpace…

It’s great that it has the realistic preview. I have been able to see formatting issues WAY easier. Of course I have had to redo the book like three times so far. Plus every time I look at my Word doc I find more small errors like typos and words that need to be changed for context. I’ll get this together soon! :-)

FINALLY finished editing and formatting my book!

I’m sure when I get the proof copy that I will still find an error or two, but it feels good to finally be done with the interior formatting. Now on to the cover!

The cover is a bit of a challenge…

I’m still working on my perfect bound self-published book through CreateSpace. I wanted to use my own cover design but getting the formatting to match their specifications is giving me a bit of trouble. Now to check out their templates and see if I can fit my images and font into them in a way that suits what I want creatively. I’ll keep you posted! :-)

I CAN HAS BOOK COVER! ^_^

I still want to do some minor tweaks but technically it’s ready to go! :-D

And…
Since I posted my cover, decided to post a screen cap of the super cool review tool on CreateSpace. I’m looking forward to having that first proof copy to see how the real thing turns out! :-)

Doing just a little at a time…

I could just sit down for 5-10 hours and knock all this self publishing stuff out at once, but I’d rather just do a bit here and there. Easy to get super burnt out if I work for hours and hours at a time (I still have an unfinished project from 2008 that I worked on for 5-10 hours per day for a few weeks!)

Right now I just finished checking out Amazon to figure out what is an appropriate price. I looked at new poetry paperbacks and the prices start from $6.47. When I sorted from high to low the top of the page had OUTLANDISH new book prices listed. The high price was $11,954.89 which I sincerely doubt is a real price for that book. I think it is more about putting the book at the top of the listing so people will buy the Kindle version for $9.

I would like to get $5 royalty per copy but per the CreateSpace royalty calculator, it looks like if I price it at 9.99 then I get $3.84 from Amazon. I don’t want to price the book too much higher than that because I sell my chapbooks for $10 and that includes shipping. Plus, I want people who can’t spend $14.99 on a book to still be able to get my book. I have to charge 11.99 retail on Amazon to get $5 royalty per book. Not too bad of a price I think.

Also, I could put it on more outlets to increase the chances of my book being seen (and therefore increase the chance it will be bought). I could pay $25 to get it put on more outlets other than CreatSpace and Amazon but I’m not ready for that today… maybe later this week. We’ll see.

The cool thing about CreatSpace is that it looks like my completed book will also go to Kindle Direct Publishing for review as well. I got a message that a print ready cover has to be uploaded. I am going to wait to hear what the review comes back as because I think that the front cover I uploaded SHOULD be sufficient. We’ll see.

In the meantime… For 25 poems (about 40 pages of actual poetry) printed in paperback, what price do you think I should put the book at?

So I was thinking of switching all my activity to WordPress…

I have all these social media sites active… you know, twitter, tumblr, facebook, etc… and WordPress is supposed to cross post over to all of them… but… so far I have yet to have it work quite the way I want from this blog. :-/

I’m trying again to see if I can get this to do what I want… It all looks good in the sharing settings page… let’s see if this works…

Looks like it is doing what I want now. So… I will start doing all my posting from WordPress… maybe… We’ll see.

#WBW = Write Bloody Wednesday — #1: Derrick C Brown made me cry…

This is going to be a new weekly thing for me to highlight and share poets who’s work I admire. It just so happens that a lot of the poets I admire most are published by Write Bloody.

I may as well start with the big Kahuna of Write Bloody Derrick C Brown himself.

From the Write Bloody website:

Derrick Brown

DOB: 2/7/1973

Brown, former paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne, gondolier, magician, and fired weatherman, now travels the world and performs his written work. As a poet, he has toured or performed with indie rock act, Cold War Kids, The Flaming Lips and Comedian David Cross. About.com called his latest collection, Scandalabra, one of the best books of 2009. To date, Brown has performed at over 1500 venues and universities internationally including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, All Tomorrow’s Parties, Glastonbury and La Sorbonne in Paris. He is the founder and Captain of Write Bloody publishing.

The first time I ever saw Derrick Brown I had never heard of him before in my life. I was supporting two things at once by showing up to the show he was performing at. #1 being my favorite Phoenix, AZ venue The Paper Heart and #2 being my favorite slam master Bob Nelson of Mesa, AZ founder of Anthology.org. I already LOVED the local poets and scene and really wasn’t expecting much from this Derrick guy… and then… HE TOTALLY BLEW ME AWAY!  I of course bought his CD (All Black Cinema if you were wondering) and as it so happened, he was one of the poets opening for Saul Williams show in Flagstaff that I was going to the following night. Turns out he isn’t just an AMAZING poet, but an all around cool guy. All of that happened back in 2007 and I have absolutely poetry stalked him ever since!

Me and my friend Kristin hanging with Derrick C Brown after the Saul Williams show 4/20/2007

OH! Almost forgot! I guess I should explain the title of this entry “Derrick C Brown made me cry” huh?

As I mentioned above I bought his CD All Black Cinema and played the heck out of it. His smooth voice was just so soothing it was the perfect way to unwind after work with a glass of 3 Buck Chuck from the Trader Joe’s up the street. Later that year I had some heart break and the soft almost melancholy tone of his poetry was too much to take and when I listened to it the effect was no longer relaxing but more throwing me deeper into the emotional pit I was already in. So OK…Derrick C Brown did not HIMSELF make me cry. but his poetry sure was a catalyst for emotional catharsis. Hey, sometimes you just gotta get it all out, right? And there you have it… The story of how Derrick C Brown made me cry.

Still don’t have my mojo back…

I seem to be neglecting my poetic side. I have been working on my art page instead (http://miouoart.wordpress.com/) and getting that all set up. It looks pretty good so far but I have a bit more to do to it before I come back to this page and get it more spiffy. Maybe this week I’ll be done with the art page. :-)

The interruption of life…

It seems like the process of just making it from day to day, month to month is taking it’s toll on my creative side… I have only been doing the busy work and not really doing anything creative and not even sharing my past creativity. Today is not the day to change that, but soon. I don’t want to leave this online space barren and inactive. Stay tuned!
